How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

The clearest signs are ceramic fuses instead of RCDs, safety switches that trip constantly,
flickering lights, or a board that feels warm to the touch. If your home was built before the 1990s
and the board’s never been touched, it’s worth an inspection either way. We’ll tell you straight
whether it needs replacing or not.

WA law requires at least two RCDs (safety switches) protecting all the power and lighting circuits before a home can be sold or rented out. Larger homes often need more than two, because each RCD can only cover a limited number of circuits. If you’re selling or leasing and you’re not sure your board complies, we can inspect it, fit what’s needed, and provide the electrical safety certificate.
Sometimes. Both need their own dedicated circuit, and older or full boards often don’t have the capacity. We check your switchboard before quoting any EV charger or air con job, so if an upgrade’s needed you’ll know upfront, not on install day
It depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits, and the condition of the existing wiring, so no two jobs are identical. What we can promise is a fixed quote before any work starts, with no surprises added on the day.
Some older boards do, particularly the black backing panels found in homes built before the late 1980s. It’s one more reason to have an older board replaced by a licensed electrician rather than left alone or handled DIY. We can remove these for you and dispose of them correctly.
